An opening balance records what a customer already owed you on the day you started using Trabalance, without re-entering every historical invoice.
Open the customer and enter the opening balance with the date you are starting from. It appears on their statement as the earliest item.
When that customer pays, Trabalance settles the opening balance before any invoice, whatever the dates involved. This is deliberate. The opening balance represents the oldest debt even when its recorded date is recent.
If you also import historical invoices, do not enter an opening balance as well. You would be recording the same debt twice.
